Blood lines in the Lac La Croix Indian Pony
The Lac La Croix Indian Pony is the genetic evolution of a combination of the Spanish Mustang and the Canadian Horse with, no doubt, a smattering of other blood mixed in over time. In 1977 when the remaining mares were rescued and bred they were bred back to a Spanish Mustang [Smokey SMR169]. Through a blood genome study and routine mane sampling for DNA markers, it has been established that there are two, relatively unrelated males blood lines within the breed. Every so many generations, these blood lines are crossed back and forth [as are the female blood lines]. Future generations are bred back to foundation stock in order to maximize genetic stability within the breed. Since 1980, with one known exception, the Lac La Croix Indian Pony has been bred pure.
